Spinoffs have always been a great way to explore other areas of a franchise, breathing life into the world and enriching the in-game lore by shining the light entirely on other aspects that would otherwise be glossed over or even ignored entirely by the core games. Production of these spinoffs usually comes at the heels of successfully launching and establishing the main franchise, with studios eager to share more of the worlds they've created.Īrriving on North American shores in 1998 (a short year after the release of Final Fantasy VII), Final Fantasy Tactics was voraciously gobbled up by fans eager for a taste of more Final Fantasy. An obvious departure from the main titles' traditional JRPG roots, Final Fantasy Tactics had players more concerned over unit placements on a battle grid, drumming up strategies and formations to turn the tide of battle in their favor. From the kid-friendly adventures in Chocobo's Dungeon to the action-packed first-person shooting in Dirge of Cerberus, Square Enix has always been rather bold in pushing the boundaries of what they can do with the Final Fantasy games through these various spinoffs.
